About The Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

The most valuable asset of the City of Albuquerque is its employees.

Both City employees and the organization benefit when employees reach out to employee health services. We will assist both you and your family no matter what department you work with.

Who is Eligible?

Employee counseling, crisis intervention, referral services, are for both employees and immediate family members living in the home. Professional counselors offer assistance with concerns about relationships, grief, parenting, work issues, depression, anxiety, stress, and everything else life may toss your way.

Other Services Offered

We provide : CPR, AED training, basic first aid, stress management, violence prevention, conflict resolution, and more.

Important: Confidentiality

Your privacy is protected by strict confidentiality laws and regulations.

The details of your discussions with our staff may not be released to anyone without your prior consent. Participation with employee health services and the EAP will not jeopardize your job or career.

Accessing the EAP


City employees may access the EAP on a voluntary basis or may be referred by supervisors or HR personnel as part of corrective action and performance management.  Temp employees not employed directly through the city do not qualify for EAP; however, we are happy to facilitate referrals for these employees.

  • Voluntary Participation:

Employees may voluntarily access services through the EAP at any time, free of charge.  All employees who are volunatirly accessing services during their scheduled work hours (exempt, non-exempt, full time, and part time) will need to utilize sick leave (or other authorized accrued leave) during all scheduled EAP appointments.

  • Formal Supervisory Referrals:

Supervisors or human resources may require employee participation in EAP services as part of performance management and/or progressive disciplinary action.  When this is the case, the employee will be required to contact the City's Employee Assistance Program and follow whatever course of action the counselors propose.  The initial assessment by the EAP counselor may be completed on city time without taking leave; however, any subsequent appointments and/or recommended treatment will need to be completed either on the employee's own time or will require the use of sick leave (or other authorized accrued leave).

Questions regarding the use of leave in particular instances should be directed to Employee Relations within the Human Resources Department.

Kristopher Wessel, MA, LCSW- Interim EAP Manager

Kristopher is independently licensed therapist who has been working as a clinician since 2006.  He has extensive experience helping individuals struggling with substance abuse and addiction issues as well as helping loved ones of an addicted individual.  He also has extensive experience helping individuals manage anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship issues.  Kristopher is a native to Albuquerque who understands the unique issues that face its citizens while still appreciating the city for all the greatness it has to offer. He is married, a father of two great children and enjoys going to concerts and loves the hobby of aquariums. 


Nadia Joseph, MA, LPCC- EAP Counselor

Raised in Albuquerque, Nadia obtained her bachelors and master’s degree from the University of New Mexico. Nadia has worked in various positions providing therapy in both inpatient and outpatient settings and has considerable experience working with people who have difficulties with anxiety, depression, and trauma, as well as general daily life struggles. During her free time, she enjoys time with her family, reading a thriller/horror book, listening to music, and spending time in the great Albuquerque outdoors



Laura Smith- EAP Senior Office Assistant

Laura is a native New Mexican and has been with the Employee Assistance Program for over two years. As the EAP Senior Office Assistant, she will be your point of contact to set up services, ask for information on services, or anything else that the EAP can assist with. She loves talking with clients and managing the day to day activites within the EAP.  Please feel free to give us a call and Laura will be very happy to assist you!

Ashley Aceves-Health and Wellness Coordinator 
Ashley is a native New Mexican and has been working with the City of Albuquerque in various departments for 13 years. She obtained her master's degree from the University of New Mexico. A true sports fanatic who is raising her favorite athletes. On her free time she watches youth and college basketball, football and track and field.   Ashley will be offering CPR/ First Aid trainings and ergonomic assessments to city employees. Ashley also hopes to connect city employees to available resources to help reach their physical and fitness goals.
